14 May 2018
On May 14 and 15, the President of UKE Mr. Marcin Cichy participates in the plenary session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), which takes place in Geneva. The Commission works in the UN system and is a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Republic of Poland is a member of CSTD since 1 January 2015.
The Commission meets annually and discusses actions aimed at implementation of the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) outcomes and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015. One of the priority issues debated this year at the CSTD meeting is building digital competencies with a special focus on children and youth.
The President of UKE presented educational campaigns addressed to the youngest Internet users. The CSTD Commission in its report referred to the projects of UKE as an example of good practice. In his speech, Marcin Cichy highlighted positive role of ICT technologies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. UKE as the regulator of the telecommunications market supports the development of technology and innovation, e.g. by providing basis for implementation of 5G in Poland, as well as by enabling environment for investment in broadband infrastructure. One of UKE priorities is also informational and educational activity addressed to various social groups, in particular aimed at empowering children in the digital environment.
