Measurement campaign under market surveillance activities - Inspection of laptops and notebooks

For this reason UKE inspected 20 laptops and notebooks which should comply with the requirements defined in the R&TTE Directive1  or RED2. Products of this type are subject to frequent technological changes.

Campaign objective

The aim of the campaign was to check the situation in the market for laptops and notebooks, and in particular to make sure that these products meet the requirements and are safe for the users.

Inspection

When selecting products to be inspected the President of UKE considered devices that are commonly available, in various price ranges, of different makes and models. The inspection involved, among others, tests in the Central Technical Test Laboratory of UKE. Moreover, it was verified whether the documents drafted and supplied with the products were in order.

Inspection of technical requirements - tests

Inspection of 10 laptops and notebooks referring to their compliance with technical requirements consisted in verifying the declared compatibility of the products with harmonized standards. The results turned out to be very good. All devices have passed the tests.

Inspection of documentation

In addition to technical requirements the companies are required to prepare correct product documentation. The simplest way to verify this information is to find the CE marking on the product or to read the "Declaration of conformity". Each manufacturer or importer is required to place its contact details on the product or its packaging.

The inspections of documents shows that for 7 out of 20 products the information referred to above has not been provided. It was necessary to launch actions in order to improve the situation.
Detailed information on the inspected products can be found in the attachment to this press release.
